History of Education in Hunza

In early 80s the people of Hunza became concerned at standard of education on offer to their children. As Pakistan spends only around 4 % of its GNP on education, therefore it can only provide 3 teachers per 1000 of heads of population. Some schools have been operating with a single teacher and some without school buildings. Alongside government Aga Khan Education Service mainly provided mass education and specially targeted at girls.

Increasing number of unemployed people with high qualifications and migration financially sound people to the cities for the sake of quality education increased the thrust of the low and medium income people for quality education. On the other hand due to the prestige carried by the English language on national level, the people of Hunza found it difficult to compete on equal terms with their fellow countrymen and women. For all these reasons local people mobilized their resources in order to try and provide their children with a level of education enjoyed by those in other societies. Therefore Educational and Social Welfare Societies were established in a number of villages, which established the community schools famous as English Medium Schools. Since now 16 English Medium schools have been established. Total number of students studying in these schools is 3693 (2333 male and 1360 female) while total number of teachers is 209 (69 male and 140 female).
